The valves in the lower sail provide additional ventilation at extreme angles of attack and switch on when a rapid build-up of pressure is required. This not only promotes collapse resistance and forgiving flight characteristics, but also ensures incomparably uncomplicated take-off behavior. The system works so well and quickly that it prevents any tendency to overshoot during take-off. The wing was designed to ensure the greatest possible safety and thus forgive pilot errors. Nevertheless, great emphasis was placed on flying fun, which is particularly noticeable in thermals. The EVOLUTION is also increasingly being used for spot landing competitions, as the PBV enables a wider range of approach angles. Especially in slow flight, the higher angle of attack range has a very positive effect.
The PBV works precisely and without delay. “In the event of a lateral collapse, valve after valve opens and ventilates the wing, while the other side is optimally inflated and flies unimpressed,” says Strobl, referring to an observation. And in the B-stall, the valves open across the entire width of the wing, while the wing remains completely calm when sinking 8 to 10 meters: no flapping, no wobbling, “but a completely controlled, calming sink,” says Strobl. Despite all the safety, the fun of flying must not be neglected, Strobl reports on the other important aspect of the specifications. That’s why he designed the wing with an aspect ratio of 4.5 and implemented an innovative line geometry: 2 main lines on the A-plane, 3 on B (incl. stabilos) and another 2 on the C-plane minimize drag. Four line diameters from 0.95 to 2.2 mm represent the optimum balance between durability and the lowest possible cross-sections. “The result is agile flight behavior, the EVOLUTION reacts relatively directly to steering impulses and can be turned nice and flat,” says Strobl. It is clear that the EVOLUTION can therefore be moved quickly. In trim, it reaches around 39 km/h, accelerated it can even reach up to 48 km/h – and all this with the very high LTF-A safety level.
